Iconic music video analysis - Homework task

The music video i have chosen is the video for 'Walk this way' by RUN-DMC and Aerosmith.

I felt that this music video was quite iconic because in the 80s Hip-Hop was very much starting to compete with Rock and Roll genre music and this music video really illustrates this competition. It is also iconic because this video was the first Hip-Hop hybrid video to shown on heavy rotation. Many people found this video iconic because aswell as demonstrating the competition between rock and hiphop it also showed how two competing genres can merge to form an awesome mix up!

In my opinion this music video is very well suited to the song as the song is a hybrid and so the music video uses two different recording rooms, a smokey grunge style rock studio and a dark slightly techy hip-hop studio.

Editing - the rock band and the hiphop band have similar prevelance to show that in this video theyre shown as equaly important however in both groups the lead singer(s) motivate the shots

Mis en Scene - The costume signifies that the rock band is a rock band by using lots of leather and also using leopard print clothes aswell, also they have the typical 1980s rocker shaggy hair style, and the hip hop group are shown as that by the use of their cool dark clothing with the white trainers and especially the hats. Also, the use of a mic stand is typical for a rocker where as it is not so much with hip hop artists.

Camera - The camera work uses lots of mid shots so that the audience can see the body language and actions of each member that support their respective stereotype for example the hiphop guys are using a lot of 'signs' or hand gestures where as the rocker is using his feet and arms more.

Lighting - The lighting in this video is very grunge style until they two band join and then it is brighter and conert lighting, this could be showing that as individual bands theyre not as good as if they joined or that its brighter when you work together as a message to the audience as in the 1970s and 1980s music was very much about sending a message to the masses.
